Dr. Peter Smith has taken a new position at University of Maryland University College as the Orkand Chair and Professor of Innovative Practices in Higher Education. Founding President of two public colleges, the Community College of Vermont and California State University, Monterey Bay, Smith has most recently finished the process of founding the Open College at Kaplan University.
Prior to his work at Kaplan, Smith served as Assistant Director General for Education at UNESCO in Paris, France, leading all the education efforts at UNESCO. He also served at Dean of the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the George Washington University. From 1980-1990, he served Vermont as state senator, Lieutenant Governor, and Congressman.
Smith is the author of three books and dozens of articles. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Princeton in 1968 and holds a doctorate in education administration from Harvard University.
