What is the fastest, easiest way to obtain IPEDS data?
Contact Linda Leyba at (303) 497-0314 or linda@nchems.org and specify which information you want for which schools.

What types of data does NCHEMS have?
NCHEMS archives the IPEDS/HEGIS Survey datasets that are collected every year by NCES (National Center for Education Statistics). NCHEMS has available the following surveys: Finance, Enrollments, Graduation Rates, Completions, Faculty Salaries, Institutional Characteristics, Fall Staff Survey, and Employees by Assigned Position. NCHEMS has data back to the late 1960's.

How do I know what is collected on the IPEDS Surveys?
Every institution should have a copy of the various IPEDS surveys because of federal requirements on data submission. Check your Institutional Research or Registrars Office, and all of the survey forms are now available on the web.  You may also contact Information Services to receive a copy of the survey form of interest to you. Most of the data items on the survey are in the dataset. Please keep in mind that survey forms change over time.

Why is there such a lag time in the data and is this a problem?
After collecting data for a dataset from all of the institutions, NCES does some major checks and balances on all of the datasets. If something is not correct or does not add up, NCES contacts that institution and tries to resolve the problem. This process is slow. Usually the lag time is not a problem, as most institutions do not change substantially over a couple of years. If you need more recent data, one method would be to directly contact the other institutions.  However, an additional year of data is not often warranted given the time involved in contacting other institutions, especially if it is a large peer group.

What forms of output are available?
IPEDS data can be put in report form and printed out (Standard Reports) in hard-copy or into Excel.

How many institutions can I include in a dataset or on a report?
However many you want. You may want information on your institution only, your institution and your set of peers, all of the institutions in your state or Carnegie Classification, or up to 500 institutions that you specify (additional charge for over 500 institutions may apply).

What if I want something not offered in the Standard Reports?
If the Standard Reports do not fit your needs, NCHEMS can produce a customized dataset for you. You specify what you want in your dataset, and we will produce it for you. The cost of a customized dataset varies, but starts at $100 per dataset per year(for example - putting all of the enrollment information on the same spreadsheet with Revenue data for public 4-year institutions in 12 selected states - would be $200).

How do I find a set of Peer Institutions?
NCHEMS offers the Comparison Group Selection Service (CGSS) for this purpose. The CGSS is designed to aid institutions in selecting a group of institutions which are similar in mission to be used in comparative data analyses. CGSS has been in use at NCHEMS since 1982 and has been used by hundreds of institutions.

Can I get the IPEDS data from the source myself?
Yes. However, while you are waiting for your data to download, your Standard Reports or Customized dataset could be emailed to you!
No hassle.
No fuss.
No figuring out column layouts or reporting software.
No time taken from your busy schedule or your analysts' overbooked schedule.

My institution is a member of NCHEMS - do I get a Membership Discount?
Yes. NCHEMS members get a 20% discount on all standard reports (saves $5 on each report).
